Jetting

When a thin gate is fed straight into the edge of a thicker wall, flow can stream into the cavity without sticking to the cavity surface. This is called jetting. Rather than filling radially from the gate, a string of material enters the mold and is encapsulated by later flow. This results in cosmetic and structural problems. This problem can usually be avoided by increasing the gate thickness to 80% of the wall thickness. Other alternatives include extending the gate under the edge, increasing the gate width, or directing the gate toward a core or feature that will disrupt jetting.
