Assembly Considerations

Ultrasonics

Ultrasonic assembly methods quickly create strong, permanent and inexpensive joints in thermoplastic assemblies. For these reasons, ultrasonic welding has become one of the most widely used methods for bonding thermoplastic parts. Ultrasonic welders use high-frequency mechanical vibration to create frictional heat that melts the mating surfaces. Common ultrasonic assembly techniques include welding, staking, spot welding and ultrasonic inserts. Weld joints typically are designed either with an energy director or an interference fit as in the common shear joint design.
