Material Selection Requirements
- Wear resistance can be important for functional as well as aesthetic reasons.
- If wear reduces the cross section of a loaded part it may eventually fail.
- Scratch resistance is of critical importance for lenses, such as eye glasses.
- The hardness properties of materials are used to compare indentation resistance and not abrasion resistance.
- Typical hardness tests are "Rockwell hardness test" and the "Durometer test".
- Indentation resistance may not correlate with abrasion, scratch, or wear resistance.
- A common test method used to measure abrasion resistance is the "Tabor abrasion test" which measures loss of volume/weight as the result of a specific abrasion process.
