Polyisocyanate crosslinking agents for solventborne adhesives
Bayer offers solvent-based polyisocyanates under the name Desmodur®
R as crosslinking agents for solventborne adhesives.
Properties: All Desmodur® R grades are highly
reactive to water and hydroxyl compounds. When used with adhesives
based on Desmocoll® and Baypren®, they improve the heat stability,
hydrolysis resistance and the resistance to grease, oils and solvents.
They also enhance the adhesion to many materials, particularly rubber
in a variety of different compositions. The Desmodur® RC and particularly
the RN grades, used in combination with suitable adhesives, show only
a slight tendency to discoloration even on exposure to light.
Uses: Desmodur® R is used where particularly
high demands are made on the durability and strength of the bonds.
The Desmodur® RFE, Desmodur® RC and Desmodur® RN grades
are, due to their outstanding adhesion promotion, used for bonding
a wide variety of different materials such as PVC, rubber, EVA and
leather. For bonding light-colored materials, it is advisable to use
Desmodur® RFE, Desmodur® RC and particularly Desmodur®
RN. Desmodur® RFE is especially recommended where the bonds are
exposed to considerable forces and stresses or heat immediately after
application.
Advantages: The Desmodur® R grades
- significantly raise the softening point of the adhesive film
- improve resistance of the crosslinked film to solvents, plasticizers,
oils and grease
- improve resistance to chemical degradation and hydrolysis
- in particular, the RE and RFE grades improve adhesion to many
materials

experts will be pleased to give detailed advice on specific applications
and on the formulation of adhesives based on Desmodur® R.
