Monomeric isocyanates for the production of prepolymers

Desmodur® and Mondur® isocyanates, when combined with Acclaim®, Arcol® and Multranol® polyether polyols or Desmophen® polyester polyols, form prepolymers for one- and two-component adhesives and specialties. Desmodur® I and W and Mondur® M and TD are the isocyanates typically used to manufacture prepolymers for solvent-free adhesives and specialties applications.

Properties: Depending on the type of polyol chosen, products can be designed to yield the softest elastomeric sealant or the toughest, most durable adhesive. One-component moisture-curing materials react with atmospheric moisture to give urea structures that exhibit high-strength bonds and good heat resistance. Two-component materials form urethane groups that give high strength, heat resistance and faster cure times. Aromatic isocyanate-based prepolymers have high reactivity, good structural strength and a tendency for discoloration from exposure to light. Aliphatic isocyanate-based prepolymers are characterized by slower reactivity and discoloration resistance compared to aromatic prepolymers.

Uses:
In the transportation industry, monomeric diisocyanates are the building blocks of choice for sandwich panel applications.

Advantages:

  • outstanding cohesion and adhesion
  • very good heat resistance
  • resistance to solvents, plasticizers and grease
  • rapid crosslinking
