UV-curable PUDs from Bayer MaterialScience LLC offer productivity improvements

June 22, 2010

Pittsburgh, June 22, 2010 — Bayer MaterialScience LLC has successfully developed ultraviolet polyurethane dispersions (UV PUDs) for use in waterborne site-applied floor coatings, offering formulators and contractors an eco-friendly floor coating with a faster return to service.

Dr. Ramesh Subramanian, head, Business Development, UV Cure Coatings, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, presented "UV-Curable Polyurethane Dispersion Coatings for Site-Applied Flooring," as part of the Wood and Floor Coatings Technical Conference Session of RadTech's recent UV/EB Expo and Conference. The presentation is based on a paper authored by Dr. Subramanian along with Bayer MaterialScience colleagues Michael Dvorchak, Charles Gambino and Bob Wade. Dr. Subramanian discussed the performance of waterborne UV-curable PUD coatings cured with full-spectrum UV light.

Dr. Subramanian explained that contractors can use a variety of methods for UV curing. Formulations for outdoor applications can be cured by natural sunlight, or coatings can be applied and cured onsite with portable UV lamps in less than four hours, which is a significant productivity improvement over alternative coatings. Another key advantage is that multiple coats can be applied, dried, then cured at once — with just one UV coating.

"We combined two excellent chemistries — UV and polyurethane dispersions — for concrete, vinyl and wood flooring," Dr. Subramanian said. "This leads to a faster return to service, which is appealing to both the contractor and customer."

These operator-friendly, high molecular weight UV resins feature a number of other beneficial properties, as well: they are odorless, co-solvent free, light stable for resistance to weathering, abrasion resistant and chemical resistant, and have good adhesion to the substrate.
