Floor It! Bayer MaterialScience Announces Collaboration with Velozzi

As the world gears up for the commercialization of a new generation of super-efficient vehicles, Bayer MaterialScience is joining the race to bring eco-friendly alternative energy vehicles (AEVs) from the concept stage to the showroom floor. Bayer MaterialScience is applying its materials, technologies and expertise to this exciting, growing market and announces its strategic collaboration with Velozzi, a start-up automotive OEM.

Bayer MaterialScience supports both traditional and non-traditional OEMs, such as Velozzi, with high-performance materials to create low-weight, high-efficiency AEVs. Velozzi is designing multiple lightweight, plug-in, multi-fuel hybrid electric vehicles that will utilize a number of materials and application technologies from Bayer MaterialScience.

To be commercially viable, in addition to being environmentally friendly, an AEV must meet a number of requirements, including a look, feel and price tag that will compel consumers to take the driver's seat. Bayer MaterialScience's materials help achieve just that, offering polycarbonates for automotive glazing, polyurethane composite constructions for load floors and liftgates, and carbon nanotubes for carbon fiber body panels that all help slash vehicle weight. In addition, Bayer MaterialScience's raw materials for waterborne polyurethane coatings and adhesives, as well as bio-based foam systems for seating and headrests offer more eco-friendly alternatives to traditional materials.

In addition to Bayer MaterialScience, all of the members of the Velozzi team exhibit world-class experience in the automotive industry. The team is led by Velozzi, which offers expertise in hybrid systems and automotive design and construction. Other members include SAMINCO, providing capabilities in traction controls, and Weismann R&D, offering its transmission know-how. Bayer MaterialScience brings the expertise of lightweight materials and automotive applications, along with engineering experience. In addition, the Velozzi team continues to expand to include even more automotive innovators — stay tuned for the news to come soon!

The Velozzi team will work together to participate in the Progressive Automotive X Prize (AXP), an international competition to create an economically feasible vehicle that averages more than 100 miles per gallon of fuel, or energy equivalent fuel economy. For the Velozzi team, the AXP is just one leg of the journey to the ultimate destination of taking its AEVs to commercial availability.

"Bayer MaterialScience is committed to the AEV market and has a deep understanding of the role innovative materials play from concept through commercialization," said David Loren, market lead, Polycarbonates group, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "We are actively seeking collaborations with suppliers and OEMs to help them navigate through the complex AEV challenges such as vehicle weight and manufacturability," Loren added.
