An Injection with Less Pain: Bayer MaterialScience LLC Materials, Expertise Contribute to Avant Medical's Needleless Injector

Anyone who must frequently self-administer medication understands the need for reliable and comfortable injections. Medical technology manufacturer Avant Medical developed the latest model (dubbed Gen 3) of its Pulse Injection® technology for needle-free injection of medications.

Pulse Injection uses vacuum stabilization and two stage delivery to achieve reliable and comfortable injections. Each dose of medicine is transported through a cassette with a nozzle piece molded from Bayer MaterialScience LLC's Makrolon® Rx2530 medical grade polycarbonate. The injector provides a continuous pathway for the drug, while generating a pulse that punctures the skin. The resulting product provides an alternative tool for healthcare professionals or people who self-administer medications.

For engineering resin and technical expertise for this innovative product, Avant Medical turned to trusted health care materials supplier Bayer MaterialScience LLC. Like many other medical device original equipment manufacturers, Avant Medical selected Bayer MaterialScience LLC's Makrolon Rx2530 polycarbonate resin for its ease of processing, clarity, dimensional stability and proprietary gamma-sterilization technology that reduces initial yellowing. Makrolon Rx2530 resin also meets the requirements of the FDA-modified ISO 10993, Part 1 "Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices" with human tissue contact time of 30 days or less.

Bayer MaterialScience LLC's contribution to this novel product went beyond supplying the material. Molding optimization, which enabled the nozzle component to achieve the strength required to withstand up to 45 impacts, was provided by Bayer MaterialScience LLC's technical staff.
