Easy Come, Easy Flow: New Grade of Makrolon® Polycarbonate Extends Medical Portfolio

Introducing Makrolon® Rx2435 polycarbonate resin.

Bayer MaterialScience LLC developed this new medical grade of Makrolon polycarbonate resin in response to increasing demand in the health care industry for a material well-suited to thin-wall applications.

Like its predecessor, Makrolon Rx2530 resin, the new grade exhibits a good balance of mechanical strength, toughness, chemical resistance and processability. It also meets the requirements of FDA-modified ISO 10993, Part 1 tests, the accepted standard for biocompatibility.

What sets Makrolon Rx2435 resin apart is its ease of flow, which was enhanced specifically to meet the needs of thin-wall applications, like dialysis components, surgical instruments — such as trocars, retractors and handles — and drug delivery devices.

"Makrolon Rx2435 polycarbonate extends our medical grade product portfolio, reinforcing our commitment to supply material solutions for an expanding breadth of medical applications," explained Kevin Dunay, market segment leader, Medical Polycarbonates NAFTA, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

The resin is supplied in pellet form for injection-molded applications. Gamma-stabilized, Makrolon Rx2435 resin is typically offered in the color Gamma (color code 451118), one of the Rx Medical colors from Bayer MaterialScience's LEDA® compounded color technology, but can also be colored in any of the other Rx Medical colors, all of which are compliant with the FDA-modified ISO 10993-1 tests.
