Balancing Act: Integrating Design, Quality and Cost in Medical Molding

When it comes to molded medical parts, there are three issues that usually play a dominant role in their development: design, quality and cost. Each is equally important, and balancing them can be tough. It takes the right material to ensure that manufacturers don't have to sacrifice one element to improve another. Polycarbonate resin is one material that can offer valuable characteristics to optimize design, quality and cost — including superior toughness and impact performance.

Mark Yeager, principal engineer at Bayer MaterialScience LLC, explores how design, quality and cost are intertwined in the development of molded medical parts in an article called "Striking a Balance in Medical Molding" that appeared in the August 2008 issue of Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry. He discusses how competition and pricing pressures make it increasingly important for manufacturers to consider all three elements in every stage of product development.
